Job Purpose and Summary
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s (PTC) Engineering Cooperative Program involves training work to develop practical proficiency and gain operational knowledge in various areas of the engineering field. An employee in this position works with higher-level engineers to acquire an understanding of established engineering practices and methods. Employees receive instruction through demonstrations and participation in design and construction projects, performing increasingly more difficult duties as the familiarization period progresses. Close supervision is provided by higher-level engineers who assign projects, give preliminary instructions and reviews work.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering principles and practices applied in the location, design, construction and inspection of roadways and highway structures.
- Provides assistance during the design and construction of projects under the direction of higher-level engineers.
- Assists in the oversight process of varying types of design and construction projects, both in the office and in the field.
- Assists with the reviews of monthly invoices and estimates as prepared by consultants or contractors.
- Reviews roadway, bridge, and traffic design and construction criteria. Assists in the inspection of roadway, bridges, tunnels and other highway features and structures.
- Reads and interprets inspection/testing reports, engineering drawings/specifications and various maps, including topographic maps.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with professional associates, supervisors, subordinates, engineering firms and contractors.
- Attends meetings and presents information clearly and effectively.
- Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Licenses
- College student with major course work in engineering or other related discipline.
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
- Must be accepted into and meet the requirements of an accredited university’s Cooperative Program that maintains a relationship with the PTC.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must obtain and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license within six (6) months of employment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading reports. Position requires frequent work at a computer utilizing business programs and PTC specific operating systems. Position requires occasional travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Occasionally works outside of normal business hours.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
