Job Purpose and Summary
This is skilled manual work in performing a variety of roadway maintenance activities. Assigned work requires the operation of a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, an emergency response vehicle, small mechanically operated equipment and hand tools. An employee in this classification is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment for performing standard or routine work in the maintenance of roadway infrastructures, facilities, grounds and various types of automotive equipment. This position is also responsible for responding to accidents/incidents for traffic control, repairing property damage and/or providing assistance to customers. Section operations may be scheduled on a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week basis. In this case, employees would select their shift assignment (line) based on seniority from a pre-established, defined workweek, including non-daylight schedules. Employees normally receive instructions at the start of an assignment and are expected to carry them out in accordance with accepted practices and procedures. A supervisor makes periodic inspections during progress and upon completion of work
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Operates a variety of heavy and/or light-duty construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, tractors, excavators, rollers, graders, backhoes, loaders, paint machines, tractor-trailer combinations, highway cleaning equipment, bridge inspection cranes, various trucks and other assigned equipment.
Operates and maintains the emergency response vehicles and equipment when assigned. Responds to accidents/incidents. Assists with traffic control, removes debris from the roadway, provides customer assistance, patrols the highway and repairs property damage.
Performs manual labor in assigned projects/activities.
Locates and corrects defects in construction and maintenance equipment.
Performs routine preventive vehicle/equipment maintenance tasks and assists mechanics in repairs of all types.
Operates PTC radio systems and telephones, receiving and relaying calls/messages. Performs routine clerical tasks as assigned.
Assists with the receipt, maintenance and disposal of supplies/inventory, off-loading deliveries, moving inventory, picking up parts/supplies at vendors and transporting supplies from one maintenance location to another.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent certification.
Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL)
OR
Possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Class A learner’s permit. Must pass the Class A CDL road test by the end of their trial period (current employees) or probationary period (new hires).
The incumbent must possess an N or X endorsement on their CDL or permit to authorize them to operate tank vehicles.
The incumbent may not have any of the following restrictions on their CDL or permit:
E – Prohibits the operation of manual transmission commercial vehicles
K – Restricts the driver to intrastate driving. Applicable for employment at Trevose, Homewood and Searights locations only.
L or Z – Prohibits driving a commercial vehicle equipped with airbrakes
O – Prohibits the driver from driving a truck tractor/semi-trailer combination
Must possess a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card).
One (1) year experience operating: tractor trailer, construction, maintenance or heavy agricultural equipment or any combination thereof.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Must possess sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift heavy objects repeatedly and to perform sustained manual labor under adverse weather conditions. Physical capability of appropriately standing, stooping, walking, lifting up to 75 pounds and carrying heavy tools and equipment when necessary. Position may demand stamina to work long hours, occasionally in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or extended work assignments. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment necessary for safely performing assigned maintenance activities. Exposure to adverse and undesirable environmental conditions. Works in extreme weather conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
