Job Purpose and Summary

This position involves work to develop proficiency in the accounting field within the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this position works with higher-level accountants to acquire an understanding of PTC accounting practices, methods, and procedures. The incumbent will receive instruction through demonstration, participation, and performance of increasingly more difficult assignments. Close supervision is provided by supervisors or higher-level accountants who assign work, give preliminary instructions, review work, and ensure adherence to established policy and procedures. Upon successful completion of twelve (12) months in this position, employees may be recommended for reclassification to a General Accountant 1.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Participates in a training program that provides on-the-job training and experience in various accounting areas.

Assists with reviewing and posting various types of accounting data. 

Makes routine adjustments and corrections as necessary.

Compiles data and drafts correspondence, communications, and reports.

Assists higher-level accounting staff with administering accounting programs.

Assists in the monitoring of forms, correspondence, reports, and other various financial transactions.

Participates in the preparation of monthly reports and analysis.

Participates in the completion of annual audits and reports.

Assists in the monthly/yearly accounting close processes.

Works with higher-level accounting staff to complete assignments and tasks. Assists with special projects as assigned.

Attends meetings, trainings, and seminars.

Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. 

Must have successfully completed a minimum of twelve (12) credits in accounting.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Position demands include frequent speaking, writing, and reading reports. Position requires frequent work at a computer utilizing business programs and PTC specific operating systems. Position requires occasional travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Occasionally works outside of normal business hours for assigned work assignments.

Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting, and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
