The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, opened on October 1, 1940, is known as “America’s First Superhighway”! The Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) Internship Program is designed to introduce rising college juniors, seniors, and recent graduates to careers in transportation. The program aims to address future workforce needs in the transportation field, specifically in the STEAM areas (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), along with other essential functions.
Job Purpose and Summary
The Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) Internship Program is a professional enrichment program which includes professional development and participation in a group project approved by the executive leadership of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this position works with higher-level professionals from various departments to acquire an understanding of established procedures, practices, and methods. Employees receive instruction through demonstrations and participation in projects, performing increasingly more difficult duties as the familiarization period progresses. Close supervision is provided by a manager or higher-level professionals who assign projects, give preliminary instructions and review work.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Participates in on-the-job training and projects designed to develop practical proficiency in departmental related programs that are intended to enhance the essential skills of the intern.
- Participates in a group project designed by executive leadership that benefits the PTC in procedural or operational planning. Presents the project to the PTC leadership team.
- Familiarizes themselves with all aspects of the organization. Promotes consensus and team building.
- Assists with conducting audits to identify departmental issues. Assists with developing corrective action plans to rectify findings.
- Participates in seminars and professional development opportunities to promote team building and to enhance the essential skills of a successful transportation professional.
- Provides recommendations for departmental programs, policies, and procedures.
- Communicates and coordinates with supervisors and contractors.
- Attends departmental related meetings and training events.
- Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- College junior, senior or recent graduate.
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
Competencies
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position demands include frequent speaking, writing, and reading reports. Position requires frequent work at a computer utilizing business programs and PTC specific operating systems. Position requires occasional travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Occasionally works outside of normal business hours.
Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting, and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
