Job Purpose and Summary

The Summer Communications Intern program involves training and assignments designed to develop proficiency and gain operational knowledge in the Communications & Marketing programs of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this position works with higher-level professionals to acquire an understanding of established procedures, practices, and methods. Employees receive instruction through demonstrations and participation in projects, performing increasingly more difficult duties as the familiarization period progresses. Close supervision is provided by a higher-level staff member who will assign projects, give preliminary instructions, and review work.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in Communications & Marketing related programs.
  • Assists with the research, development, review and/or edit of communications materials.
  • Assists with implementation of communications plans in support of the organization’s overall priorities.
  • Assists with internal and external events including planning, production, pre/post communications, and day-of logistics.
  • Provides day-to-day support to colleagues on departmental projects. 
  • Drafts social media posts in line with social marketing strategies.
  • Participates in marketing tasks, campaigns, and programs to promote a positive image and keep the public informed of PTC programs and activities. 
  • Assists with production of publications, videos, and the development of web content. 
  • Attends trainings, meetings, and other events as required.
  • Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.
  • Performs related duties as assigned as per college internship program requirements.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in the sophomore, junior, or senior year of a post-secondary educational program majoring in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Position demands include frequent speaking, writing, and reading reports. Position requires frequent work at a computer utilizing business programs and PTC specific operating systems. Position requires occasional travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Occasionally works outside of normal business hours.

Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting, and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
