Job Purpose and Summary
This is skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures at various locations for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the electrical and mechanical trades. Work is assigned and reviewed by a supervisor through observation of equipment installed, repaired or maintained and adherence to the electrical code.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Maintains, repairs and installs electric motors, relays, conductors, pumps, heaters, fans, air conditioners, electric services, distribution centers, breaker panels, card control devices, emergency generators, switch gears, transformers, roadway lighting, tunnel lighting, general lighting, conduit and associated wiring.
Locates and corrects power failures and short circuits.
Estimates time and materials needed for projects.
Inspects, isolates, troubleshoots and repairs electrical malfunctions using various test instruments.
Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
Operates an aerial lift and works at heights.
Operates and properly maintains systems, tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and prints.
Must be available 24/7/365 for emergency response.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent certification.
Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL)
OR
Possess a valid driver’s license with a valid CDL learner’s permit. Must pass the Class B CDL road test by the end of the probationary period (new hires) or trial period (current employees).
The incumbent may not have any of the following restrictions on their CDL or learner’s permit:
E – Prohibits the operation of manual transmission vehicles
K – Restricts the CDL driver to intrastate driving
L or Z – Prohibits driving a commercial vehicle equipped with airbrakes
Must possess a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card).
Completion of electrical technical training at an accredited technical school and three (3) years of experience with a commercial/residential balance as an electrician;
OR
Five (5) years of documented electrical experience with a commercial/residential balance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading reports. Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Incumbents must be able to read fine print and fine details with no color deficiencies. Position requires the physical capability to appropriately stand, stoop, walk, lift and carry heavy tools and/or equipment when necessary. Frequently lifts and/or carries up to 50 pounds of equipment, material and tools, occasionally up to 150 pounds without the assistance of a heavy lifting device. Frequently exerts 10 to 100 pounds of force, using one or both hands/arms. Uses hand or power tools while working on electrical systems. Works reaching overhead or in a bending, squatting, kneeling or prone position. Position may demand occasionally working long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or for extended work assignments. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Works in extreme weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, in confined spaces and at heights. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
