Job Purpose and Summary
This is skilled manual work in the operation of a variety of heavy and light-duty construction and maintenance equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of equipment on moderately complex construction and maintenance operations. Detailed instructions are usually received from a supervisor relating to new maintenance or construction assignments. Work is performed according to established procedures with frequent inspections during progress and final inspection of work upon completion by a supervisor.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Operates a variety of heavy and/or light-duty construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, various trucks, tractors, excavators, loaders, rollers, graders, backhoes, paint equipment, highway cleaning equipment and other assigned equipment.
Operates large motorized rollers to compact base or surfacing materials.
Operates a tractor trailer in transporting heavy equipment or other heavy loads. Operates various other types of heavy-duty construction or maintenance equipment.
Performs minor servicing or light maintenance work on equipment and assists mechanics with repairs. Makes emergency repairs and running adjustments on equipment as needed.
Develops and maintains routine reports on equipment operation.
Performs manual labor on assigned projects/activities.
Trains personnel on equipment maintenance and operation.
Performs routine clerical tasks.
Works extended hours, on call 24/7, to assist in the management of normal and emergency operations.
Utilizes a PTC radio system for transmitting and receiving information.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent certification.
Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL)
OR
Possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Class A learner’s permit. Must pass the Class A CDL road test by the end of their trial period (current employees) or probationary period (new hires).
The incumbent must possess an N or X endorsement on their CDL or permit to authorize them to operate tank vehicles.
The incumbent may not have any of the following restrictions on their CDL or permit:
E – Prohibits the operation of manual transmission commercial vehicles
K – Restricts the driver to intrastate driving. Applicable for employment at Trevose, Homewood and Searights locations only.
L or Z – Prohibits driving a commercial vehicle equipped with airbrakes
O – Prohibits the driver from driving a truck tractor/semi-trailer combination
Must possess a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card).
One (1) year of experience in operating: tractor trailer, construction, maintenance or heavy agricultural equipment or any combination thereof.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position may demand stamina to work long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or extended work assignments. Lifts, carries heavy objects, or exerts forces equivalent to lifting up to 75 pounds. Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Must wear personal protective equipment necessary for safely performing assigned maintenance activities. Exposure to adverse and undesirable environmental conditions. Works in extreme weather conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
